Vaginal Yeast Infections

Vaginal yeast infections are
very common. The genitals provide a warm, moist
environment where the growth of fungal organisms and yeast
flourishes. In the vagina, most infections are caused by
candida albicans.
It is normal to have candida
growth in the body and on the skin. But when your body’s
defences are down the growth may not be controlled by the
friendly bacteria in your body, and a vaginal yeast infection
results. This weakened immune system can be caused by
illness and stress of all kinds.
The chance of getting a
vaginal yeast infection is increased if you take antibiotics or
estrogen, if you are pregnant, or if you suffer from diabetes
or an immunosuppressant disease. It is not considered a
sexually transmitted disease, although it can be contagious if
the other person does not have sufficient immunity.

Symptoms
The symptoms of a vaginal
yeast infection usually include a burning pain and itching in
the vulvar area, and a white or watery vaginal discharge.
There may be pain with urination and with sexual
intercourse.
Similar symptoms are
experienced with other conditions, including some allergies,
bacterial vaginosis and some STDs, so it’s always sensible to
have a test so you can treat the problem in the right
way.
Prevention
Always better than a
cure!
Doing your best with the
following will go a long way in preventing further outbreaks of
a vaginal yeast infection:
- Keep the vulvar area
clean, using unscented soap. Rinse and dry
well.
- After using the toilet
always wipe from front to back to avoid introducing yeast
to the area.
- Don’t use feminine
“hygiene” products, as they upset the ratio of good and bad
vaginal organisms, and may allow candida organisms to
grow. These products include deodorant sprays and
wipes, scented tampons and douches.
- Avoid tight-fitting
clothes which create a warm, moist genital area.
Always wear underwear that has a cotton crotch to wick away
dampness. Don’t hang around in a wet bathing
suit.
- Avoid taking antibiotics
as much as possible. Antibiotics kill beneficial as
well as harmful organisms, and may allow candida to
proliferate.
- Eat a diet rich in fruits
and vegetables. Avoid sugar and alcohol.
And if you’re feeling run
down, try to get as much rest as possible, preferably actual
sleep. Keep exercise moderate and stay off sugar and
dairy products.
Cure
Do you want treatment or a
cure? Treatment will alleviate or remove the symptoms of
your vaginal yeast infection. But it will not necessarily
change the cause, the reason you’re getting the
infections.
Treatments that work by
removing the symptoms include medical, herbal and other natural
remedies.
Many medical treatments can be
purchased over the counter in most countries. Others need
a prescription. The most common are anti-fungal
medicines. These are available as tablets, creams and
suppositories.
Natural medicines vary in
their efficacy. Some of the most popular treatments are
used by putting them inside the vagina. They include
yogurt, vinegar, boric acid, garlic and various herbal
infusions.
If you want to be rid of
recurring vaginal yeast infections, you do need to change the
environment in which the yeast thrive. The best way to do
this is with an intelligent, holistic, natural
approach.
